Akee Apple Tree (blighia sapida)

Native to the Gold and Ivory Coast’s of Africa, Akee is a beautiful tree with a short trunk, a dense crown of spreading branches and a canopy of bright green glossy leaves. A lover of warm temperatures fragrant Akee flowers appear in spring spreading a blanket of white across the tree. Fruit produced is pear shaped with a leathery scarlet exterior. Not ripe until it splits open, reveling the 3 creamy colored glossy arils that are crisp and have a slightly nutty flavor. The shining seeds also contained, should not be consumed. Beautiful as an ornamental shade tree. Fruit must be cooked.
