Joy Perfume Tree (magnolia champaca)

Extremely aromatic orange and creamy-white flowers bloom virtually year-round attracting pollinators from miles around. Champaca is commonly cultivated as an ornamental tree throughout the tropics and is prized for the exceptionally fragrant flowers, which are often used in religious ceremonies. Fun Fact: the globally famous perfume, Joy, the second bestselling perfume in the world after Chanel No. 5, is derived from the essential oils of the Champaca flowers. Pollinated flowers turn to alien looking seed pods that sport cream colored dots over dark brown hulls and burst open to expose bright red seeds. This clean medium height tree of around 30 feet when mature is, hands down, one that every tropical gardener should have in the collection.
